One like a son of man

Whether the figure coming with the clouds is an angel, Israel, or the Messiah, and what Jesus claims by the title.

Daniel 7:13-14

13“I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

14Dominion was given him, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which will not pass away, and his kingdom that which will not be destroyed.

Matthew 26:64

64Jesus said to him, “You have said it. Nevertheless, I tell you, after this you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky.”

What each tradition says

Rabbinic / Midrashic

Rashi identifies the figure “one like a man” coming in Daniel 7:13 as the King Messiah. The coming figure is thus the Messiah in Rashi’s reading.

Rashi, Rashi on Daniel — The Judaica Press Tanach with Rashi, trans. A. J. Rosenberg (via Sefaria)Rashi on Daniel 7:13

Patristic

Hippolytus says He took to Himself a name common and current among men. From the beginning He was called Son of man because of what He was to be, though not yet man. Daniel testifies that he saw one like the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven.

Hippolytus, Against the Heresy of One Noetus, §4 (ANF vol. 5, ed. Roberts & Donaldson)§4 — the Word was called 'Son of man' from the beginning (on Dan 7:13)

Catholic

Haydock, following Calmet, Menochius, and Worthington, takes the figure as Christ. Though Christ appeared about sixty years after the Syrian monarchy’s fall, these expressions literally refer to his second coming. He had the form of man because he had man’s nature; he is clearly predicted, and by his power antichrist is overthrown.

George Leo Haydock, George Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary (1859)Note on Daniel 7:13 (following Calmet, Menochius, Worthington)

Orthodox

Chrysostom explains that, to take away all their excuse, He taught unto the last day that He was Christ, that He sits at the right hand of the Father, and that He will come again to judge the world. This was the language of one manifesting His full accordance with the Father.

John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of St. Matthew, Homily LXXXIV (NPNF ser. 1, vol. 10, trans. George Prevost)Homily LXXXIV, on Matt 26:64 ('Hereafter shall ye see the Son of Man...')

Reformed / Protestant

Calvin says this is without doubt to be understood of Christ. He adds that the Jews, perverse as they are, are ashamed to deny it, although they differ afterwards about Christ.

John Calvin, Commentary on Daniel, vol. 2 (trans. Thomas Meyers; Calvin Translation Society)Commentary on Daniel 7:13 ('one like the Son of man')

Evangelical

Wesley identifies the “son of man” in Daniel 7:13 as the Messiah. He says the Messiah came with the clouds of heaven, gloriously, swiftly, and terribly.
